..The Baltimore City Fire Department has been providing marine fire protection for the Port of Baltimore since July of 1891, when our first fireboat known as "Cataract" was commissioned as Engine Company 16.
..The Marine Division grew steadily during the early years, reaching its peak of operation between 1922 and 1971 when there were four Fireboat Companies, a separate Marine Battalion Chief with Tender Boat, and over 130 Officers and men assigned.
..Today, the Marine Division operates one large fireboat, with a crew of 5, and one small Fire/Rescue Boat, with a crew of 2, manned full time at Baltimore's only remaining Fireboat Station, strategically located in Baltimore Harbor at Fort McHenry, Locust Point. This facility has been in use since 1917, when it was established for Engine Company 39, with the steam fireboat, "Deluge".
..The Fireboat Company is now assigned to the 6th Battalion.
This area will be used for a weekly photo to be posted. Could be things from the Marine Division, old and new, or just stuff going on, past or present, around our district, The World Port Of Baltimore.
