Baltimore's Fireboats


Cataract works all four monitors on the B&O Railroad coal pier fire, .Locust
Point, in 1941. During the heyday of the Cataract, the Northwest Branch of
the harbor was heavy industry with many old wooden piers and wharfs.------

..Engine Tests : Tests made of the Fireboat "Cataract" showed that one pump could deliver 3,690 g.p.m. at 178 psi. and the other 3,670 g.p.m. at 179 psi. On a pressure test each could deliver nearly half its capacity at about 300 psi. With both pumps running on capacity they delivered 7,100 g.p.m. at 171 psi. Steam pressure was well maintained.

Cataract at her berth, .Pier 7,. foot of President Street .in 1956. .For a brief
period, 1956-58, the Fireboat hulls were painted gray. The upper works are
white, with the stack, ventilators, and monitor tower a buff color.-------------

career from 1914 to 1960 at the President Street Fireboat Station. ------------


Decommissioning of the Cataract

..On October 2, 1960, the new Fireboat "P. W. Wilkinson" arrived in Baltimore from Oyster Bay, NY, and on the morning of October 4, 1960, the Fireboat Cataract was delivered to the Fire Department Repair Shop, where Engine Company 16 changed over to the new Fireboat. The Cataract was decommissioned and the "P. W. Wilkinson" placed in service at 11:46 hours on the 4th.


Service as a commercial tug

..The Cataract was sold at auction, 1407 Key Highway, to successful bidder, George E. Rogers of Baltimore. By 1966 she was sold to Harbor Towing Corp. of Baltimore and her steam machinery and boilers removed and renamed "Wm. J. Taylor". Sold May 1975, re-named "Lucy Watson" by Watson-Pitchford, Inc., Baton Rouge, La. Re-powered with an EMD 16-567BC 16 cylinder diesel, rated at 2,000 H.P. In 1977 she was transferred to Watson Marine Services, Inc, Port Allen, LA. Sold February 1985, re-named "Stacey Fackrell" in May 1986 by Convent Marine Companies, Inc., Convent, LA. Dismantled in 1987 at Port Allen, LA. by Convent Marine.
